Cubs swept, I'm heading home instead of Wrigley

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops."

--A. Bartlett Giamatti

The Cubs have broken my heart many times in my life, but this one ranks way up there. It's not the same as being five outs from the World Series in 2003, but this time it was personal. I am at my class reunion this weekend and had plans to finish the weekend off on Sunday at Wrigley Field with three of my high school friends, but instead I am heading for home after the Cubs kicked me in the gut by getting swept by the DBacks. Completely outplayed three games in a row. Hard to understand. Hard to accept.

I had a great time at the other events this weekend, though, and will write about them later. For now, all I can think of, again, is how another Cubs season ends with thoughts of "what could have been" and, of course, the standard Cubs saying, "wait till next year."

Although I am not as deeply invested as you are this season, I cried last night, not for the team but for all the lifelong fans faces of disappointment, hanging on still in the ninth with that last shread of hope. Man, it really takes the wind out ones sails. Maybe next year, when we hit that majical 100 years since a championship team? I thought they really wanted it this year. Humph!

Anxious to hear your take on Wonder Lake and McHenry and your reunion.
